Aerospace & Defense Innovation
Powell is perfect for aerospace research and development, specifically for UAS. Federal lands borders the airport in all directions; this buffers development encroachment outside the airport. Weather conditions including ceiling, visibility, and winds, are more favorable at Powell Airport for arrivals and departures than other regional airports.
In July 2023, FAA approved UAS flight operations at Powell Airport for joint manned and unmanned flights. It was one of the first designations of its kind in the United States. Moreover, UAS FAA special airworthiness certificate was awarded to GT Aeronautics for the GT 380 UAS allowing joint manned and unmanned aircraft flight operations at Powell Airport.
The current Powell Municipal Airport Master Plan has 50 acres of aeronautical development and 140 acres for manufacturing.
