RAILS WITH TRAILS PROJECT

The Great American Rail Trail is a 3,700 mile project aiming to connect Washington State and Washington, D.C, providing safe trails and outdoor recreation to citizens across the country. There are 500 miles planned to go through Wyoming. Most importantly, Powell has the opportunity to be part of this national effort.

Nestled between the BSNF Railroad and the Garland Canal, Powell’s trail would stretch from Garland to Ralston and run alongside U.S. Highway 14A. This trail would provide outdoor recreation right at our doorstep. In addition, it would also boost economic development and create a healthier, more connected Powell.

Connecting Wyoming to the Rest of America

This trail would create a safe and easily accessible path for our community, helping seniors, students, and families, for instance. Adding walkable paths provides a new freedom to move throughout the city without relying on a car. Additionally, this path would also provide a free outdoor recreation opportunity, offering routes for biking and walking.

However, this project isn’t just about outdoor recreation – it’s a smart investment in our local economy. Across the state, tourism connected to the Great American Rail Trail is projected to generate over $13 million in new revenue. This means new tax dollars, increased visibility, and increased economic stability for Powell. Local businesses would see more foot traffic, and jobs related to outdoor recreation would increase. Moreover, graduates of Northwest College’s outdoor education programs, it means jobs in their field, right here at home.
